The Gaia Hotel Beitou — soak in white-sulfur springs in your own room, deep in the Beitou forest

The Gaia Hotel is a 5-star hot-spring resort where "every room has its own private onsen", tucked into the Beitou hills among lush greenery. Beitou's famous white sulfur spring water — milky and velvety, prized for its skin benefits — flows straight into the bathtub in every guest room, making this a stay for travellers who want to soak without sharing.

Our Full Review

The Gaia Hotel reopened in 2015 after a major renovation of the former Pacific Hot Spring Hotel, under the philosophy "take a different path to discover a different world" — blending art, culture and rest. The resort hides on a hillside in Beitou, away from the city's bustle yet only about 20 minutes from central Taipei by MRT.

The heart of the property is a private white-sulfur hot spring in every single room. Beitou's spring water is famously cloudy and milky — locals call it the "Milk Bath" and believe it nourishes the skin. Many guests say the best moment of the trip is running the spring water into the tub, settling in and looking out at nothing but green treetops, without ever leaving the room.

"Soaking in the in-room hot spring in the morning with only forest in view was so peaceful — it feels like nature, yet it's just 20 minutes from the city."

Beyond the in-room baths there are also gender-separated public hot springs set in a garden (nude, in the onsen tradition), with a sauna and steam room, complimentary for hotel guests, plus an outdoor swimming pool that faces the forest. The image of the pool under its arched glass roof, ringed by trees, is one of the most-photographed corners of the resort — though note the pool closes for annual maintenance from January to March.

There are six room categories, from the Qiyan Room (33 sqm) up to The Gaia Suite (66 sqm), all finished in warm wood tones with resort-grade details: Bvlgari bath products, a Dyson hair dryer, an in-room water purification system to cut plastic waste, and welcome refreshments. The property is also home to a striking 4-storey library — a giant wall of books that has become the hotel's architectural signature — alongside a spa, a gym and a LOHAS relaxation area.

For dining, the main restaurant Piacere serves a semi-buffet Italian-French breakfast (with complimentary sparkling wine), while Qiyan ONE offers Sichuan-Hunan Chinese cuisine and Moon Shabu Shabu does hot pot. Most guests praise the breakfast as varied and high quality. One thing to understand: The Gaia sits on a hillside and the terrain is steep — but the hotel solves this with a free hourly shuttle to and from MRT Beitou and Xinbeitou, running from 8:45 am.

In short, The Gaia Hotel is best for couples, honeymooners and anyone who wants to escape the city for a private onsen soak without travelling far out of town. If you value quiet, nature and the freedom to soak in your own hot spring whenever you like, this is, without doubt, one of the finest onsen hotels in Beitou.

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
If you're coming to Taipei to genuinely rest — to soak in a private white-sulfur onsen surrounded by nature, and you don't mind being away from the city — The Gaia Hotel is the most complete onsen resort in Beitou for a honeymoon or a pure relaxation trip.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you travel between January and March — the swimming pool closes for annual maintenance → the in-room and garden hot springs stay open as usual, so an onsen-focused stay is still fully worthwhile
  • 💡If you want to sightsee in the city every day — the resort is on a Beitou hillside, away from the shopping districts → take the free shuttle to the MRT and connect by train, or treat this as the rest night of your trip
  • 💡If you're sensitive to the sulfur smell — the whole Beitou area has a faint natural hot-spring scent → most people get used to it within a few hours, and it's a sign the spring water is the real thing
