→ Route A (HSR + car hire) — Arrive at Hualien by noon, full day in the gorge the next morning, no energy wasted on Taipei motorway traffic.
→ Route B (7 days full loop) — Xueshan Tunnel into Yilan, south through Suhua Improvement to Hualien, back via inland mountain route. 100% road-trip freedom. IDP essential.
→ Route C (3-day Yilan loop) — Light driving, Jiaoxi carbonate onsen suits children, Toucheng beach is fun, back in Taipei by Sunday lunchtime.
→ Route A trimmed to 4 days — HSR is still great value; renting in Hualien for 3 days is far cheaper than a Taipei one-way rental. Tightest budget: skip the car entirely and book a Klook group tour to Taroko.
→ Route C or Route B Day 1–2 — Toucheng has a genuine surf vibe; Jiaoxi's free public foot baths run along the main street. You can do both in 48 hours without rushing.
→ Route B, but note: The Suhua Improvement is mostly tunnels. For the dramatic cliff-edge shots, you need to ride the TRA train or a public bus on Old Suhua (Route 9) — rental cars are not the answer here.
