Why visit Yamaguchi

Why Yamaguchi is a prefecture of coast, caves and old towns

Yamaguchi is the prefecture at the very western tip of Honshu, separated from Kyushu only by the narrow Kanmon Strait. Few Thai travelers come here yet, but its sights are beautiful and varied. On the Sea-of-Japan side the stars are Motonosumi Inari, where 123 red torii run down a cliff to the sea, and the Tsunoshima Bridge, which crosses a clear turquoise sea to a small island. In the center lies Akiyoshido, the largest limestone cave in Japan, beneath the Akiyoshidai karst plateau. To the east, near Hiroshima, the city of Iwakuni has the five-arch wooden Kintai Bridge; to the north is the old castle town of Hagi, home of Hagi-yaki pottery; and the capital, Yamaguchi, has the five-story wooden pagoda of Rurikoji, one of the finest in the country. To finish, there is the fugu pufferfish of Shimonoseki, Japan's fugu capital.

About — Yamaguchi travel 2026

Yamaguchi (山口) is the prefecture at the western tip of Honshu in the Chugoku region, separated from Kyushu by the Kanmon Strait. Its capital is Yamaguchi City, and it is known for Motonosumi Inari with its 123 red torii, the Tsunoshima Bridge over a turquoise sea, the Akiyoshido limestone cave, the wooden Kintai Bridge, the old town of Hagi, and the fugu pufferfish of Shimonoseki.

It is easy to reach on the Sanyo Shinkansen to Shin-Yamaguchi Station, about 30 to 35 minutes from Hiroshima or Fukuoka, from where buses run to Akiyoshido and Hagi; but Sea-of-Japan spots like Motonosumi and Tsunoshima have little public transport, so a car is far handier.

This page gathers stays by area, standout food such as fugu pufferfish, kawara soba, Iwakuni sushi and natsumikan citrus, the main sights and a 3-day Yamaguchi plan, with one-click hotel price comparisons across Agoda, Booking and Trip.com. Information is current for 2026, but please re-check prices, opening hours and seasons before you travel.
