Two completely different moods in one day's walk — Sakae is the buzzing city centre with Mirai Tower and the Oasis 21 glass-water roof, while Osu is the old covered arcade of bargains, vintage finds and the street food Nagoyans love. Here are the highlights, how to reach each one, and where to stay nearby.
Plenty of people only stop in Nagoya to change trains, then grumble that there's nothing to do — honestly, you just haven't walked these two districts yet. Sakae is the heart of the city: rows of department stores, Mirai Tower standing tall, and Oasis 21, a spaceship-shaped glass roof that glows beautifully after dark. Walk a little further south and you hit Osu, an old covered arcade that runs for nearly a kilometre, packing bargain shops, second-hand clothing, electronics stores, anime and street food all into one place.
The best part is how close the two sit — about a 10–15 minute walk apart, or just one or two subway stops. That makes it easy to plan a single day that covers smart shopping, cheap finds, an old temple and a city view. On this page we've gathered the spots worth stopping at, how to reach each one, the nearest subway station, and where to stay in the area.
Nagoya is easy to get around on the city's Municipal Subway. Sakae Station is a junction of three lines (Higashiyama · Meijo · Sakuradori), and from Nagoya Station the Higashiyama line gets you into Sakae in just 8–10 minutes.

🗼 Sakae1
A 180-metre steel tower in the middle of Hisaya-odori Park, this is the symbol of Sakae. Head up to the observation deck for a view across Nagoya in every direction, and don't miss the pool below that mirrors the tower — a favourite photo angle. After dark it lights up for a completely different look.
Nagoya Attractions →A sleek modern complex right beside Mirai Tower. The highlight is "Spaceship Aqua" — a spaceship-shaped glass roof with water pooled on top. Walk the elevated path 14 metres up for a view all around, with a green plaza, shops and bus connections below. After dark the lit-up roof is a real sight.
Nagoya Attractions →Sakae is Nagoya's main shopping district, with big department stores, brand shops and underground malls all linked by long subterranean passages. Newly renovated Hisaya-odori Park (Hisaya-odori Park / RAYARD) adds restaurants, cafés and a long ribbon of greenery through the middle of the city for a break between stores.
Nagoya Travel Guide →A covered shopping warren of around 1,200 shops you can browse in any weather — everything from second-hand clothing and electronics to toys, anime and snacks on the go, from takoyaki and fried chicken to sweets. Nagoyans love it for the bargains and the lively, unpolished energy.

⛩️ Osu5
A bright red temple in the heart of Osu, and the natural place to start your walk into the arcade. The grounds are free and always open, so you can pay your respects then head straight into the shops. The special draw: on the 18th and 28th of every month, an antique market of around 60–80 stalls sets up in the temple grounds.

🏯 North of Sakae6
The city's landmark castle, famous for the pair of gold-clad dolphins (kinshachi / shachihoko) on the roof ridge and the beautifully restored Honmaru Palace. It's only a few subway stops from Sakae, an easy half-day add-on to your downtown wander.

The Osu arcade is a paradise for eating on the move — takoyaki, fried chicken, sweets and shops from all over the world. Snack as you browse; it's where Nagoyans love to refuel mid-afternoon.
Nagoya is known for hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice, eaten three ways) · miso katsu, pork cutlet under miso sauce · tebasaki, fried chicken wings · and kishimen flat noodles — easy to find around Sakae.
Sakae is full of cafés, bars and late-night restaurants. Try Nagoya's "morning" culture (order a coffee and breakfast comes free) at least once, and there are plenty of spots in the malls and Hisaya-odori Park to relax.
If your trip is about shopping and nightlife, Sakae is the best value — you can walk to the malls, restaurants and the Osu arcade, and the subway reaches everywhere. If you'd rather connect onward by shinkansen, stay near Nagoya Station and ride the Higashiyama line into Sakae in just 8–10 minutes.
