A big, mellow island in Krabi's Andaman Sea · long west-coast beaches like Long Beach and Khlong Nin · scenic Kantiang Bay · the national-park lighthouse cape · the sea-gypsy Old Town · and some of Thailand's best diving
Koh Lanta is a large island off the coast of Krabi in the Andaman Sea, famous for keeping its slow, easy-going vibe while many Thai islands grew loud. A single road runs down the west coast linking a string of long sandy beaches — from family-friendly Klong Dao in the north to quieter Khlong Nin and luxurious Kantiang Bay in the south. Add a national-park lighthouse cape, the atmospheric sea-gypsy Old Town, world-class dive sites and unforgettable sunsets, and you have one of Thailand's most relaxing island escapes.
On Koh Lanta you don't pick a neighbourhood so much as a beach. One road links them down the west coast — calm, family-friendly sands in the north, livelier sunset beaches in the middle, and quiet luxury coves in the south. Pick the stretch of sand that matches what you came for.

Lanta eats straight from the Andaman — grilled fish on the beach, fiery southern curries and Old Town seafood on stilts over the water. Southern Thai food is bolder, hotter and turmeric-rich. Here is what you can't miss.
The reason to eat on Lanta — whole fish, prawns, squid and crab grilled fresh off the boats, served with spicy seafood dipping sauce. Best at a beach shack or an Old Town pier restaurant over the water.
Island SignatureThe intense soul of southern Thai cooking — a pungent, deeply savoury curry of fermented fish innards, turmeric and vegetables. Fiery and not for the faint-hearted, but unforgettable with rice.
Southern ClassicFresh rice noodles drowned in a turmeric-yellow fish curry, piled with raw vegetables and herbs you add yourself. A classic southern breakfast — cheap, filling and found at every local market.
Local BreakfastFrom sour-spicy seafood salads (yam) to gaeng som (tangy orange curry) and stir-fried sator beans with shrimp — southern Thai food is hotter and more turmeric-forward than anywhere else in the country.
Bold & SpicyMango, mangosteen, rambutan and fresh coconuts straight off the island, plus crispy fried roti drizzled with condensed milk and banana — the perfect sweet end to a beach day.
Sweet TreatsLong Beach and Khlong Nin are lined with mellow beach bars where a cold drink, bare feet in the sand and a fiery Andaman sunset are the whole point. Easy-going, never rowdy — pure Lanta.

Main BeachThe island's southern tip — a white-and-red lighthouse, a short jungle nature trail, troops of monkeys and viewpoints over two seas. A little beach and clear water reward the drive south.
Lighthouse CapeA row of century-old wooden shophouses and stilt houses on the east coast — the island's original port and a blend of sea-gypsy, Thai and Chinese heritage. Seafood restaurants jut out over the water.
Heritage & PiersTwo of the Andaman's best dive sites — dramatic pinnacles cloaked in soft coral with manta rays and the occasional whale shark. Day boats run from Saladan in the dry season.

Essential info and getting-around tips to help your Koh Lanta trip run smoothly from the very first step.
Fly Bangkok → Krabi (KBV) in ~1 hr 20 min, then take a shared minivan ~2 hrs to Lanta — two bridges now connect the islands, so there's no car-ferry wait. In high season, speedboats also run from Phuket and Koh Phi Phi.
Carry cash for beach shacks, markets and small resorts. Cards and PromptPay QR work at bigger hotels and restaurants, and there are ATMs in Saladan and along the main road (expect a per-withdrawal fee).
The island is long and spread out — renting a scooter is by far the easiest way to hop between beaches. Songthaews and resort transfers exist but are limited; Grab is patchy here, so plan ahead.
Pick up a tourist SIM (AIS, TrueMove or dtac) at Krabi airport, or activate an eSIM before you board. 4G is solid along the west coast, though it can thin out near the national park.
