HSR from Taipei in 1.5 hrs · NT$1,080 · Alishan Forest Railway depot here · NT$1,500 hotel vs NT$5,000+ on the mountain — Chiayi is the answer most visitors overlook.

Most visitors treat Chiayi as a transfer point — grab the forest railway ticket and rush up the mountain. But unless you have a specific reason to sleep at 2,200 metres, basing yourself in Chiayi city and day-tripping to Alishan is smarter in almost every way.
Chiayi sits at just 100 metres above sea level. That gap means reliable mobile signal, two rotating night markets, restaurants that actually compete for your business, and a hotel bed that costs a fraction of what you would pay inside the national park. The city is also the sole departure point for the Alishan Forest Railway, which fully reopened in July 2024 after 15 years of post-typhoon repairs — a genuinely scenic journey you can do one-way up and bus back down.
| Factor | Stay Chiayi City | Sleep on Alishan |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel price per night | NT$1,500–2,500 | NT$4,000–8,000+ |
| Food variety | Excellent — 2 night markets | Limited — park restaurants only |
| See the sunrise | Not possible (bus arrives 08:00) | Yes — wake at 04:30, take Sunrise Train |
| Getting back to Taipei | Easy — HSR in 20 min by shuttle | Must descend 2.5–3.5 hrs first |
| Mobile signal | Full signal all night | Patchy in some areas |
| Best for | Most travellers, families, couples | Photographers, romantics, sunrise seekers |
Best of both worlds: 2 nights in Chiayi + 1 night on Alishan. You get the city comforts, the Forest Railway, and the sunrise — without paying mountain prices every night.
Forest Railway fully operational: After Typhoon Morakot destroyed sections of the line in 2009, the Chiayi–Zhushan main line fully reopened in July 2024. The dedicated Alishan Express runs daily from January 2025. Tip: take the Forest Railway up for the scenery, then ride the bus back down to save time.
Leave at dawn, reach the misty forest by 08:00, and be back in time for Turkey Rice at the night market.
The sunrise requires an overnight stay: If watching the sunrise from Alishan's Observation Platform is your primary goal, you must sleep inside the park. The special Sunrise Train departs around 04:30 from Alishan Station — there is no way to make this from Chiayi on the same morning.
Stay two nights and spend your first morning exploring — Chiayi rewards the curious.

A small urban park planted with hinoki cypress in memory of the era when Alishan's forests were systematically logged. A short 20–30 minute walk; it gives you a taste of the forest canopy without leaving the city — ideal if your Alishan day is rained out.
