Quick Answer

The Short Version — Which Pass Fits Your Trip?

Pick the scenario that matches your itinerary and you’re done.

💳

Short trip (1–2 days) or light sightseeing

Using MRT fewer than 3 times per day, no major paid attractions planned. EasyCard is cheapest — you can never overpay for an unused pass.

→ EasyCard
🚈

2–4 day trip with heavy MRT use

Riding MRT 4–5+ times per day, focusing on food and shopping. Unlimited Pass pays off from MRT fares alone without needing to check what’s in the pass.

→ Unlimited Pass
🎫

3+ attractions per day including Taipei 101

Planning Taipei 101 Observatory (NT$600+), Maokong, NPM and more in 1–2 days. Fun Pass clearly saves money — but only if your venues are on the current inclusion list.

3 Trip Scenarios — Which Pass Actually Saves Money?

Admission prices are approximate 2026 figures · NT$1 ≈ USD 0.031

🎫
Trip A — 3 days, heavy sightseeing
Taipei 101 + Maokong + NPM + Yangmingshan
Taipei 101 Observatory (floor 89)~NT$600
Maokong Gondola (round trip)~NT$120
National Palace Museum~NT$350
Yangmingshan (bus 108 + park entry)~NT$100
MRT 3 days (~4 trips/day × avg NT$30)~NT$360
Total paying separately (EasyCard + tickets)~NT$1,530
Taipei Fun Pass 3-day~NT$1,800
⚠️ In this scenario EasyCard + separate tickets is actually cheaper. Fun Pass wins when you add more included venues — Beitou hot springs, additional museums, or other paid sites currently in the pass.
🚈
Trip B — 4 days, food-focused, heavy MRT
5 MRT trips/day, minimal paid attractions
MRT 4 days EasyCard (5 trips × NT$30 × 4 days)~NT$600
Automatic 20% EasyCard discount–NT$120
Total EasyCard (after discount)~NT$480
Unlimited Pass 3-day (3 heaviest days)NT$440
✔ Unlimited Pass 3-day (NT$440) saves ~NT$40 over EasyCard. Gap widens with 6+ trips/day or on a 5-day pass (NT$700 vs NT$840+ EasyCard).
💳
Trip C — 2 days, light MRT use
2 MRT trips/day, lots of walking, no paid attractions
MRT 2 days EasyCard (2 trips × NT$30 × 2)~NT$120
20% discount applied–NT$24
Total EasyCard~NT$96
Unlimited Pass 2-dayNT$310
✔ EasyCard wins by a wide margin — NT$96 vs NT$310. Short trips with light transit use should always default to EasyCard.

Who Should Use What

5 Traveller Types — Which Pass Is Right for You?

👜
First-time visitor, 3–4 days, packed itinerary
Planning Taipei 101, NPM, Maokong, Beitou, Jiufen. Using MRT daily. Fun Pass 3-day is appealing if chosen sites are on the current list — but Jiufen day trips are typically not included, so verify first.
Fun Pass 3-day (check inclusions)
🍜
Food traveller — night markets, restaurants, neighbourhood hopping
Primary goal is eating and exploring districts. Not interested in observatory tickets. Using MRT 4–6 times a day. Unlimited Pass 2–3 days breaks even quickly on transit alone.
Unlimited Pass 2–3 days
🏋️
Workcation or extended stay (1–2 weeks)
Daily commutes to cafes and co-working spaces, not sightseeing every day. Want to use YouBike and shop at convenience stores. EasyCard is most flexible for longer stays.
EasyCard
👪
Family with children — zoo, NPM, shopping centres
Young children ride MRT free. Adults use MRT moderately. Planning Taipei Zoo, NPM and Children’s Recreation Centre. Fun Pass child + adult combo can save significantly if venues match.
Fun Pass combo (check inclusions)
🛹
Backpacker, 2-day whirlwind visit
Limited time, want flexibility, using MRT only 2–3 times a day. EasyCard is the simplest choice — buy at the airport on arrival, no pre-booking required.

Pro Tips

5 Tips to Get the Most from Your Pass

📅
Activate on your heaviest sightseeing day
Both Fun Pass and Unlimited Pass start counting from first use, not purchase date. Activate on the day you plan to visit the most places to maximise every remaining day.
🎫
Fun Pass: stack venues in a single day
1-day Fun Pass? Make it count — morning NPM, afternoon Maokong Gondola, evening Taipei 101. With MRT unlimited included, chain venues across the city and you will definitely break even.
💳
Refund your EasyCard deposit before departure
Taoyuan Airport has EasyCard refund machines airside. Get NT$80 back (NT$100 minus NT$20 fee) plus remaining balance. Do this before passing through immigration.
🗺️
Free attractions don’t count as pass value
CKS Memorial Hall and Liberty Square are free for everyone — not in any pass. When calculating whether a pass pays off, only count venues that charge an entrance fee.
🔍
Check the Fun Pass inclusion list before buying
The venue list changes with seasons and promotions. Verify on Klook that the sites you want are currently included before paying — do not assume from an old blog post.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ — Taipei Transit Passes

When does the Taipei Fun Pass start counting?
The Fun Pass starts counting from the moment you first scan and use it — not from purchase or collection date. Buy in advance on Klook and activate on your heaviest sightseeing day so every remaining day in the pass period adds value.
Does the Taipei Unlimited Pass cover buses?
Yes. The Unlimited Pass covers both MRT trains and public buses in Taipei’s EasyCard network with unlimited trips. It does not cover the Airport MRT Express (blue line, NT$160 nonstop) — that must be paid separately regardless of which pass you hold.
Can I use an EasyCard in other Taiwanese cities like Kaohsiung?
Yes. EasyCard works nationwide — Kaohsiung MRT, city buses in Taichung and Tainan, YouBike 2.0 everywhere, and convenience stores such as 7-Eleven and FamilyMart across Taiwan. This is EasyCard’s biggest advantage over the Taipei-specific passes if you’re visiting multiple cities.
Is there a pass that includes the Airport MRT Express?
Neither the Unlimited Pass nor the standard Fun Pass includes the Airport MRT Express (blue line, NT$160). EasyCard works on the Commuter Line (NT$70–130, all stops) but not the Express. Some Fun Pass editions include an airport transfer bonus — check the Klook listing before buying.
Do children get a discount on Taipei passes?
Children aged 6–11 qualify for Child passes at roughly half the adult price. Children under 6 (under 115 cm tall) ride MRT free without needing a seat. The Fun Pass has a Child version on Klook at ~20–30% below adult price. Confirm age/height thresholds with the seller when buying.
Can I cancel a Taipei pass and get a refund?
Fun Pass and Unlimited Pass purchased through Klook can be cancelled before activation per Klook’s cancellation policy (typically free cancellation 24–48 hours before use). Once activated, no refund. EasyCard: the NT$100 deposit is refundable at airport or station machines, minus a NT$20 handling fee — net NT$80 back plus remaining stored value.
