Skwachays Lodge — Canada's first Indigenous arts hotel · revenue supports the community

Want a stay that's unlike any other and meaningful? Skwachays Lodge is it. Canada's first Indigenous arts hotel, where every room is designed by a First Nations artist and revenue supports the community and Indigenous artists — for travellers who want to journey with purpose.

Our Full Review

Skwachays Lodge (pronounced 'squatch-eyes') sits on West Pender Street in Downtown East, beside Chinatown and not far from Gastown, with Stadium-Chinatown Station on the Expo Line a short walk away. The location suits travellers who want to be near historic, cultural districts, with easy walks to Gastown and Chinatown.

What makes it truly unique is the concept — Canada's first Indigenous arts hotel, where all 18 rooms were designed by First Nations artists with designers, each with a different theme and story like Forest Spirit, Northern Lights or Poem. A tall totem pole marks the building outside.

Downtown East Vancouver

"Every room is designed by a First Nations artist and revenue helps the community — staying here is both a bed and a meaningful act of support."

Rooms are full of character, decorated with real Indigenous artwork. Honestly, the size and polish may not match a 5-star, but the value is in the uniqueness and the stories behind it, ideal for those who value cultural experience over conventional luxury.

Downtown East Vancouver

What makes a stay here meaningful is that revenue supports a non-profit helping Indigenous people in Vancouver, and there's an in-house gallery selling authentic Indigenous art. A stay is both a bed and a way to support the community.

On value — a starting rate of around CAD 200 (฿5,400) a night is worth it for an experience you can't get elsewhere. If you value culture, art and responsible travel, it's a truly special pick. If you want full facilities or a large room, look elsewhere.

Downtown East Vancouver

Worth knowing: parts of Downtown East have social issues (homelessness); be aware at night as in any big city. The hotel itself is safe and walks to Gastown/Chinatown, and with just 18 rooms it's small, so book ahead as it fills fast.

In short, Skwachays Lodge sells Indigenous art, uniqueness and meaningful travel. If you want a cultural experience that supports the community, choose it. If you're after luxury or full facilities, look at other options in our list.
