Joie de Inn — French name, night market soul in Fengjia

If you're heading to Taichung and Fengjia Night Market — Taiwan's biggest — is your main event, Joie de Inn (享沃行旅 · pronounced zhwah-de-in) is the smartest boutique choice in the neighbourhood. A freshly opened 3-star inn (2024) just 5 minutes' walk from the market entrance, with individually designed pastel rooms, free artisan coffee and snacks, and a score of 8.8 on Booking.com.

Our Full Review

Joie de Inn opened in 2024 in the Fengjia district of Xitun, Taichung — and the name tells you exactly what the owners were going for. Joie de vivre — the French joy of living — translated here into a 7-room boutique inn where each room has its own distinct character. The sky-blue Superior room features a cloud-print feature wall and brass sconces; the Deluxe Quadruple has a raw microcement and gold-leaf accent wall. This is not a cookie-cutter budget property: there is clearly a design sensibility at work, and guests across hundreds of reviews consistently single it out.

"Guests say the room is spotlessly clean, the design is lovely, and the complimentary coffee at reception genuinely surprised them. It's a 5-minute stroll to the night market — many say if they come back to Taichung, they're staying here again."

Location is the primary draw. Joie de Inn sits on Xi'an Street, which runs directly into the Fengjia nightlife strip: 5 minutes' walk puts you among the street-food stalls, bubble tea stands and 1,000-plus vendors of Taiwan's most famous night market. Breakfast cafes and morning porridge shops are within a 2-minute walk. Uber and Grab are plentiful day and night. The HSR Taichung station for onward travel is about 12 km away — roughly 25 minutes by taxi or Uber. There is no MRT line to Fengjia, but within the neighbourhood you can walk to nearly everything.

The single most commented-on quality in guest reviews is cleanliness — scoring 9.5/10 on Trip.com, which is exceptional for this price bracket. Staff receive similarly warm scores for friendliness and helpfulness, with the caveat that English is limited; most guests note that gestures and translation apps bridged the gap without any friction. Complimentary perks include artisan-brewed coffee, drinks and snacks available in the lobby throughout the day — a small but genuinely appreciated touch.

Blue pastel Superior room with twin beds and brass wall sconces

There are four room types: Superior Double (1 queen bed, 21 m²), Superior Triple (1 single + 1 queen, 21 m²), Superior Quadruple (2 queen beds, 21 m²), and Deluxe Street View Quadruple (2 queen beds, 27 m² + city view). All rooms come with a smart TV, high-speed fibre Wi-Fi, mini fridge, work desk and private bathroom with hairdryer. Prices run from approximately NT$1,800 for a Standard Double to NT$2,400 for the Deluxe, with seasonal variation. The Deluxe is worth the NT$300–400 premium for two travellers carrying large suitcases.

Honest caveats: with only 7 rooms, availability evaporates fast around long weekends, Golden Week and Chinese New Year. The reception desk is not staffed around the clock — if you are checking in after midnight you must call or message ahead, and the hotel will arrange keyless access. There is no breakfast included (completely unnecessary in this neighbourhood, where NT$50 buys a bowl of hot congee), no fitness centre and no pool. Guests who need those things will find K Hotel a short walk away at a higher price.

Deluxe quadruple room with gold accent wall and city-view windows

Across 1,059+ reviews on Booking.com (score 8.8) and 278 reviews on Trip.com (score 9.3), the guest profile is consistently couples and friend groups who chose Taichung specifically for Fengjia and want a clean, characterful base without paying boutique-hotel prices. The minority of lower-rated reviews flag rooms feeling tight for two large suitcases, and some noise bleed between rooms — both genuine observations rather than deal-breakers.

The bottom line: Joie de Inn is the smartest value play in the NT$1,800–2,400 bracket if Fengjia Night Market is the centrepiece of your Taichung trip. You roll out of the market, walk five minutes back to a room that looks better than it costs, and fall asleep with the scent of stinky tofu still in your jacket. Accept that service is pared-back and rooms are compact, and this place genuinely over-delivers.

💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you're travelling with more than two large suitcases — standard rooms are sized for 2 people and 2 bags → upgrade to the Deluxe Street View Quadruple (27 m²) or ask to store bags at reception
  • 💡If you plan to check in after midnight — the front desk closes late evening → message or call the hotel before arrival; they can arrange keyless access so you're not stranded
  • 💡If you need on-site amenities like a gym or breakfast buffet — Joie de Inn is purely a sleeping base → K Hotel a short walk away offers those at around NT$500 more per night
